Non-Urgent Appointments During the Pandemic

01/26/2021

Chicago Dental Appointments

There’s no doubt about it: the coronavirus has changed a lot about how we do things! Our dental office in Elk Grove has been adhering to strict protocols to keep our patients and staff safe since the beginning of the pandemic. Still, it’s understandable why some people have been nervous to visit the dentist and ‘open wide’ for any reason other than an emergency.

For the vast majority of people, the benefits of keeping up with dental checkups outweigh the risk of visiting the office. Not only are regular visits to a general dentist in Illinois important for maintaining your overall health, they can also save you money in the long-run—and even lift your spirits!

What is a “Non-Urgent” Dental Appointment?

A non-urgent dental appointment is any kind of visit that isn’t triggered by a problem. Near the beginning of the pandemic, dentists were only allowed to treat those in the midst of ongoing dental care and those experiencing dental emergencies. Since then, dental offices like ours have been able to see patients safely for all routine dental services.

The Benefits of Regular Dental Visits

Most patients are recommended to visit a general dentist in Illinois every 6 months (or twice per year) for a professional cleaning and dental examination. These visits are equally important to the daily care you perform every day at the sink (brushing and flossing your teeth).

  • Limit restorative work.

A dental examination allows your dentist to become familiar with your teeth and identify problems before they develop (or worsen). Skipping your appointments may lead to serious dental health issues and more invasive procedures later on.

  • Get a better clean.

Having your teeth professionally cleaned removes buildups in areas that you cannot reach with a regular toothbrush or floss. Professional dental tools and training enable us to find and remove harmful plaque and tartar from your teeth.

  • Maintain your overall health.

Regular cleanings can reduce your risk of developing gum disease. Not only can gum disease cause early tooth loss, it can also negatively impact your cardiovascular health! Keeping your gums healthy can help reduce your chances of stroke and heart attack.

  • Take advantage of your benefits.

Most popular dental insurance plans cover biannual preventative visits. If you’re insured but skipping appointments, you could be missing out on benefits that could save you money in the long run. Check with your insurer to see what is included in your plan.

  • Walk out with a brighter smile.

A professional cleaning can help lighten stains on your teeth. Because of this, many patients notice that their teeth look brighter and whiter after a visit to the dentist. Having a smile that’s beautiful and well-cared-for can do a lot for a person’s confidence!

  • Identify early signs of disease.

Oral cancer kills roughly one person every hour in America, partly because many people do not recognize the early symptoms. Visiting the dentist regularly provides more opportunities to identify oral cancer in its earliest (and most treatable) stages.
